SIXTH ANNUAL LONG ISLAND NATURAL HISTORY CONFERENCE

The Future of Brook Trout in Long Island - Long Term Thinking
Christopher Aigner, President of the Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited,

It has taken approximately 200 years to degrade the vast majority of cold water streams in Long Island to the point of being incapable of supporting native brook trout populations. Causes include low oxygenation, chemical imbalances, passage barriers and poor reproductive habitat. Where it took 200 years to destroy, it may take far less time to rebuild with the right public and private support. This presentation is to summarize Trout Unlimited's grassroots vision for tacking the long term restoration of Long Island's streams, the tools available to all interested parties, and projects currently underway by various conservation and environmental groups.
