Roadkill in Riverhead

An otter killed on Rte. 58 in Riverhead sometime during the night of April 16-17. Picked up by Sean Keenan and delivered by NYSDEC staff to the Cornell Lab for a necropsy. Young male in good physical shape before being hit, 40 inches long and weighing 13 pounds. It must have had a home range that included the Peconic River (not far to the south) and a series of small ponds north of Rte. 58. Based on the amount of sign at the ponds, it may have been traveling with at least one other male (males often travel in small groups). It will be difficult to prevent future otter roadkils at this site, but worth exploring some options.

Here are videos of otter habitats nearby.
